Teachers Empowered to Lead Sustainability Education Across Kashmir
The Jammu & Kashmir Association of Social Workers (JKASW), in collaboration with the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) and with support from the Wipro Foundation, successfully organized two Teachers’ Training Programmes under the Wipro Earthian Sustainability Education Programme on 22 and 23 May 2025.
The first training was conducted at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Sopore, bringing together teachers from Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts. The second programme was held at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kothi Bagh, Srinagar, with participation from educators representing Srinagar, Pulwama, Budgam, and Ganderbal districts.
Facilitated by Mr. Ashish Shah, Consultant, Wipro Foundation, along with JKASW’s Wipro Earthian Fellows, the sessions focused on integrating sustainability into classroom teaching through experiential and nature-based learning approaches.
Teachers explored the programme’s core themes Waste, Water, and Biodiversity and learned practical strategies to guide students in designing sustainability projects connected to their academic curriculum and local environmental issues.
The workshops encouraged educators to move beyond traditional teaching methods and adopt interactive approaches that promote critical thinking, environmental responsibility, and student-led action.
Participants actively shared ideas, classroom experiences, and innovative practices while expressing their commitment to transforming schools into centres of environmental learning and sustainable development.
As part of its continued partnership with schools, JKASW will provide ongoing mentoring, facilitate project submissions to the national Wipro Earthian Programme, and document successful sustainability initiatives implemented across participating schools.
By empowering teachers as sustainability champions, JKASW continues to nurture environmentally conscious schools and inspire young people to become responsible stewards of the planet.
